Choosing art above a sofa is a question of proportion. The sofa gives you a useful visual reference, but the ceiling, nearby windows and other furniture also affect how much space a painting needs.
Measure the usable space
Note the sofa’s width and the clear wall above it. Exclude switches, shelves and any area where a door or curtain would interfere. Measure from the sofa back upward, rather than treating the full floor-to-ceiling wall as available hanging space.
Test an outline before you order
Make a paper outline of the proposed artwork’s outer width and height. If you are comparing two sizes, test them separately. Look from the doorway and from the opposite side of the room. The right outline should feel connected to the sofa without crowding adjacent features.
Compare one painting with a group
A single work creates an uninterrupted shape. A pair or gallery wall creates a larger overall outline with gaps inside it. For example, two pieces each 60 cm wide with an 8 cm gap occupy 128 cm in total, before any additional frame width. This is a measurement example, not a universal hanging rule.
Check what the size option includes
Product dimensions may refer to the painting, the canvas or the framed artwork. Read the size information for the selected finish. On a set page, distinguish the dimensions of each painting from those of the complete arrangement.
Choose the height from the room
Try the paper outline at a height that feels connected to the sofa and comfortable from your usual viewing position. Allow space above cushions and anything regularly placed on the sofa back. Avoid using a single hanging height as a rule for every room.
