Gallery wall spacing affects both the rhythm of the arrangement and the amount of wall it occupies. Before choosing a gap, check whether the set’s product page supplies a suggested layout or an overall measurement.
Use outer frame dimensions
Measure the outside of each framed piece, or use the stated outer dimensions when available. A canvas measurement alone may not describe the final hanging size. For unframed stretched works, check the finished dimensions of the selected option.
Calculate the complete width and height
For two equal pieces in a row, add their outer widths and one gap. For three pieces, add all three outer widths and two gaps. A two-by-two group has both a horizontal and a vertical gap to consider. Write these measurements down before marking the wall.
Make paper templates
Cut or tape together paper to match each outer shape. Place the templates on the wall using a removable method suitable for your paint finish. Start with the intended gaps, then step back and check the balance with the furniture below. Photographing the paper arrangement can help you compare two options.
Use consistency as a starting point
Equal gaps make a grid easier to read. An arrangement of different sizes may benefit from aligned centres or a shared outside edge. The aim is a clear relationship between the pieces, not a compulsory number of centimetres for every wall.
Check the set’s own assumptions
Some product diagrams calculate overall size using a specific frame and gap. If you change either, the total will change too. For instance, the Portrait-Quiet layout information should be read alongside the selected size and finish, rather than used as a universal guide for other sets.
Mark hanging points last
Once the paper layout feels right, check the hanging hardware and the wall construction. The position of a fixing may differ from the top edge of the frame. Use hardware suitable for the artwork’s weight and your wall, and seek installation help where needed.
